Stainless Steel Temperature Range and Uses

 

Type 304

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 8% Ni
  • Properties: Good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low-temperature strength, and mechanical properties; non-magnetic; operational temperature range -196℃ to 800℃.
  • Uses: Household products (tableware, cabinets, indoor pipelines, water heaters, boilers, bathtubs), auto parts (windshield wipers, mufflers), medical equipment, building materials, chemicals, food industry, agriculture, ship parts.

Type 304L

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 8% Ni, low carbon
  • Properties: Similar to 304 with excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or stress relief; maintains corrosion resistance without heat treatment.
  • Uses: Outdoor machines in chemical, coal, and petroleum industries, heat-resistant building material parts, and parts difficult to heat treat.

Type 304Cu

  • Composition: 13% Cr, 7.7% Ni, 2% Cu
  • Properties: Good formability and resistance to aging cracks due to Cu; corrosion resistance similar to 304.
  • Uses: Thermos flasks, kitchen sinks, pots, kettles, insulated lunch boxes, door handles, textile processing machines.

Type 304N1

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 8% Ni, N
  • Properties: Improved strength and reduced thickness due to N; prevents plasticity reduction.
  • Uses: Components, street lights, water storage tanks, water pipes.

Type 304N2

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 8% Ni, N, Nb
  • Properties: High-strength steel for structural parts with added N and Nb.
  • Uses: Components, street lights, water storage tanks.

Type 316

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 12% Ni, 2.5% Mo
  • Properties: Excellent corrosion resistance, atmospheric corrosion resistance, and high-temperature strength due to Mo; non-magnetic; good work hardening properties.
  • Uses: Seawater equipment, chemicals, dyes, papermaking, oxalic acid, fertilizer production equipment, photography, food industry, coastal facilities, ropes, CD rods, bolts, nuts.

Type 316L

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 12% Ni, 2.5% Mo, low carbon
  • Properties: Same as 316 with superior resistance to grain boundary corrosion.
  • Uses: Applications requiring high resistance to grain boundary corrosion.

Type 321

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 9% Ni, Ti
  • Properties: Prevents grain boundary corrosion due to Ti; suitable for use at 430℃ to 900℃.
  • Uses: Aircraft, exhaust pipes, boiler drums.

Type 409L

  • Composition: 11.3% Cr, 0.17% Ti, low C, N
  • Properties: Improved high-temperature corrosion resistance and strength due to Ti.
  • Uses: Car exhaust pipes, heat exchangers, containers not heat-treated after welding.

Type 410L

  • Composition: 13% Cr, low carbon
  • Properties: Excellent processability, resistance to welding deformation, and high-temperature oxidation resistance.
  • Uses: Mechanical structural parts, engine exhaust pipes, boiler combustion chambers, burners.

Type 430

  • Composition: 16% Cr
  • Properties: Low thermal expansion, excellent formability, and oxidation resistance.
  • Uses: Heat-resistant appliances, burners, home appliances, tableware, kitchen sinks, exterior decorative materials, bolts, nuts, CD rods, screens.

Type 430J1L

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 0.5% Cu, Nb, low C, N
  • Properties: Improved corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and high-temperature oxidation resistance due to added Cu and Nb.
  • Uses: Building exterior decoration materials, automobile parts, hot and cold water supply equipment.

Type 436L

  • Composition: 18% Cr, 1% Mo, Ti, Nb, Zr, low C, N
  • Properties: Good heat resistance and abrasion resistance; excellent processability and weldability due to Nb and Zr.
  • Uses: Washing machines, car exhaust pipes, electronic products, three-layer bottom pots.

Type 410

  • Composition: 13% Cr, low carbon
  • Properties: High strength, good workability, and surface hardening according to heat treatment; magnetic.
  • Uses: Knife blades, mechanical parts, petroleum refining equipment, bolts, nuts, pump rods, tableware.

Type 420J1

  • Composition: 13% Cr, 0.2% C
  • Properties: High hardness after quenching, good corrosion resistance; magnetic.
  • Uses: Cutlery (knives), turbine blades.

Type 420J2

  • Composition: 13% Cr, 0.3% C
  • Properties: Harder than 420J1 after quenching; magnetic.
  • Uses: Knife blades, nozzles, valves, boards, rulers, cutlery.
