Introduction

Aluminum profiles are created by transforming aluminum alloy into various shapes with a specific cross-sectional profile. This process leverages aluminum’s unique physical properties, making it ideal for numerous applications. Aluminum’s malleability allows for easy casting and machining, while its density and stiffness—one-third that of steel—ensure stability and strength, especially when alloyed with other metals.

The Aluminum Extrusion Process

Step 1: Preparing the Die and Billet

The process begins with designing and creating the die shape. The aluminum alloy cylindrical billet is then heated to temperatures between 800°F and 925°F.

Step 2: Lubrication and Loading

The heated billet is transferred to the loader, where it is lubricated to prevent sticking to the extrusion machine, handle, or ram.

Step 3: Extrusion

A ram applies substantial pressure to a dummy block, pushing the aluminum billet through the die into the container.

Step 4: Nitrogen Introduction

Liquid or gaseous nitrogen is introduced through sections of the die to prevent oxide formation, creating an inert atmosphere and extending the die’s life.

Step 5: Cooling

The extruded part, now elongated, passes onto a run-out table shaped like the die opening. It is then pulled to a cooling table where fans cool the newly formed aluminum profile.

Step 6: Work Hardening and Straightening

After cooling, the extruded aluminum is relocated to a stretcher for work hardening and straightening.

Step 7: Cutting

Once hardened, the extrusions are moved to a saw table and cut to the required lengths.

Step 8: Heat Treatment

Finally, the extrusions undergo heat treatment to harden the aluminum, speeding up the aging process.

Customization Options

During the extrusion process, additional complexities can be introduced for customization. For instance, piercing mandrels can create hollow sections within the die. After extrusion, various options are available to adjust texture, color, and finish brightness. Common surface finishes for aluminum profiles include mill finish, anodizing, and powder coating.
