Efficiency Improvement in the Steel Industry

Achievements in Energy Conservation and Efficiency Improvement in the Steel Industry

Promoting Ultimate Energy Efficiency

The steel industry has steadily advanced its ultimate energy efficiency project, now one of the top three initiatives in the sector. This project has quickly gained widespread support and is a primary focus for many companies. By benchmarking key process energy efficiency, the "Dual Carbon Best Practice Energy Efficiency Benchmark Demonstration Plant" initiative has been launched, cultivating 58 benchmark companies. Additionally, the industry has held eight promotion meetings on efficient coal gas utilization and medium-to-low temperature waste heat recovery. These efforts have encouraged enterprises to invest in energy-saving technologies, yielding significant energy-saving results.

Declining Energy Consumption

The steel industry's main energy consumption indicators have consistently decreased. Continuous optimization of the process structure, increased use of scrap steel, and the adoption of technologies like hot rolling without heating furnaces have contributed to this trend. In 2023, the comprehensive energy consumption of key steel enterprises per ton of steel was 558 kilograms of standard coal, a 7.4% decrease from 2012, placing it at an international leading level. Energy consumption in major production processes, including coking, blast furnace, converter steelmaking, and electric furnace steelmaking, has also declined.

Improving Energy Utilization

Energy recovery and utilization efficiency in the steel industry have significantly improved. By 2023, self-generated electricity from waste heat and energy increased to about 56%, up 11 percentage points from 2017 and 21 percentage points from 2012. Waste heat and energy recovery technologies, especially gas boiler power generation, have developed rapidly. The unit consumption of blast furnace gas per kilowatt-hour has reduced from 5m3 to about 2.5m3, with advanced units achieving a thermal efficiency of 44%.

Enhancing Comprehensive Energy Management

The steel industry has strengthened its energy management systems, with about 80% of enterprises obtaining energy management system certification. Efforts in creating energy efficiency benchmarks, conducting energy-saving diagnoses, and identifying gaps have improved refined energy management. Over 100 steel enterprises have established modern energy management and control centers, enabling centralized control of energy media and online energy data collection and analysis, thus enhancing energy management and production efficiency.
