India Fails Again in EU Safeguard Exemption Negotiations

No Agreement Reached

On June 18, 2024, India failed to secure an exemption from the EU Safeguard Measure on certain steel products. This setback marks another unsuccessful attempt following last year's failed negotiations with the US for special treatment under the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminium.

EU's Decision on Indian Steel

Recent reports indicate that the European Union has rejected India's request for an exemption. The European Commission, along with EU member states, has decided to extend the Safeguard Measure until 2026 after a rapid review.

Persistent Efforts, Continued Failures

India has made multiple attempts to obtain exemptions from the EU Safeguard Measure, but each effort has ended in disappointment. The ongoing challenges highlight the difficulties India faces in securing favorable trade terms for its steel industry.

  Steel and Iron Ore Trade Statistics for China – May 2024 Steel Exports In May 2024, China exported 9.631 million tons of steel, a 4.4% increase from the previous month. The average price was $783.7 per ton, up 0.8% from April. From January to May, China exported a total of 44.655 million tons of steel, marking a 24.7% increase from the previous year. Steel Imports China imported 637,000 tons of steel in May 2024, a 3.2% decrease from April. The average price was $1,651.5 per ton, down 3.3%. Between January and May, total steel imports amounted to 3.043 million tons, a 2.7% decrease from the previous year.
